IRS Steps Up Charity Enforcement In 2011
The Internal Revenue Service revealed that it has hired about one hundred new employees in its audit division since 2008 in order to scrutinize charities more closely. The IRS intends to conduct more charity audits in 2011.

Hands Across the Border: Working with the Canadian Non-Profit Sector
This past year we’ve seen an increase in the number of U.S. nonprofits seeking to broaden their programs and fundraising opportunities. Many are looking north to Canada, where a strong and progressive charitable sector is compatible with the U.S. nonprofit culture. Although there are similarities in the two regulatory systems, differences in how tax-exempt entities are established, governed and regulated in Canada are important for American nonprofits to understand when looking to operate or fundraise there.

Seth Perlman spoke with solicitor Lucinda Main of Beard Winter LLP, a Toronto, Ontario law firm. Beard Winter is familiar with the unique corporate governance and structural issues related to the operation of Canadian non-profit entities and charities and fundraising by U.S. charities in Canada. They discussed how charities are regulated in Canada and what U.S. nonprofits need to know before embarking on a reach north.

Feed the Children Names Cass Wheeler Interim President

Feed the Children (FTC) announced in December that Cass Wheeler, the retired  CEO of the American Heart Association, will serve as its Interim President. He will play a key role in assisting FTC in their nationwide search for a permanent president and CEO.
