Altruism and Compassion in Economic Systems Conference

Cliff Perlman attended a three day conference entitled “Altruism and Compassion in Economic Systems." The conference, which took place in Zurich, Switzerland and was sponsored by the Mind and Life Institute, brought together world renowned economists, psychologists, spiritual leaders (including the Dalai Lama), neuroscientists and anthropologists to talk about recent empirical research on empathy, altruism, economic decision making and fairness in current economic systems – the ultimate question being is it possible to develop an economic system that rewards compassionate incentives and also focuses on resolving social and environmental problems.

Greatly discussed were the newer fields of social neuroscience and neuroeconomics which, in essence, study the mind's physical reaction to social and economic decisions through brain mapping. Needless to say the conference proved quite interesting and germane to this firm’s efforts to keep abreast of the issues implicated in both charitable giving and socially conscious companies and their interrelation.
