The Explorist Institute
This firm is proud to count The Explorist
Institute as one of our clients.
The Explorist Institute was founded by graduates of Harvard
and the MIT, who created the Institute to connect philanthropists
with a global network of scientists via an online, competitive
marketplace in an effort to solve the world’s most pressing science
challenges such as the need for alternative energy sources, clean
water, and the eradication of disease.
The Explorist Institute promotes itself as a
win-win for philanthropists and researchers.
It provides philanthropists who wish to address science
challenges with a venue in which to post requests for proposals that
are available to researchers online.
For researchers, no matter where they may be working, The
Explorist Institute is a one-stop website that widens the scope of
potential funding sources. No longer are potential recipients
limited to traditional research organizations and universities.
An example of The Explorist Institute’s
“marketplace at work” is the Rockefeller Institute’s recent posting
of a $15,000 prize to fund the development of a low-cost water
treatment system based on solar radiation and titanium dioxide.
Within four weeks of the posting date, approximately 300
teams from all over the world applied for the prize.
Applications are currently being reviewed and a winner is
expected to be announced in the next few weeks.
Another example is Prize4Life’s posting of a $1
million prize for the identification of an ALS (amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) biomarker for
measuring disease progression.
To date, approximately 700 researchers have applied for the
prize. The deadline for
submitting applications for this project is May 15, 2011.
